OUR VISION

SHINE YOUTH MUSIC THEATRE

Created by Founder and Director, Gordon Beck in 2003. Shine launched with the vision of creating an intergenerational arts community within Clydesdale to inspire and uplift children and young people and provide a creative space for parents and adult volunteers. With a creative production team and a cast of children and young adults, Shine presented the musical, Annie as its inaugural production.

Throughout the years, Shine grew and expanded its reach to welcome new members and volunteers throughout the organisation. From 2003 until 2010, Shine Youth Music Theatre presented 24 productions including, Joseph and The Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat, Les Miserables, Oliver! and Billy Elliot, which they also performed in London’s West End. Shine’s creative teams crafted detailed costumes and intricate sets that grew with each new production requiring workshop and storage facilities which were acquired within Castlehill Industrial Estate, Carluke.

Our purpose-built studios provide a physical home for Shine as well as a centre for the development of arts activities in Lanarkshire. Built entirely by volunteers and based in Carluke, The Lighthouse features three multi-purpose studios, reception area with coffee bar, box office, and office space. The largest studio converts to a small studio-theatre seating up to 150 people. In 2020, The Lighthouse expanded once more with the addition of a large outdoor courtyard and marquee studio.

Over 20 years, Shine has performed over 60 musical theatre productions, designed and built The Lighthouse Studios & Arts Centre, and expanded our team of volunteers to include experts in set design, costume design, sound & lighting, social media, marketing, finance, merchandising, administration and more and created an organisation where children, young people and adults can be passionate, creative and inspired.

To celebrate our 20th anniversary, Shine has performed across the West of Scotland, beginning with a production of School of Rock in Motherwell Concert Hall in March 2023, Six – Teen Edition in The Lighthouse in June 2023, Frozen JR in The Lighthouse in August 2023, Grease in Lanark Memorial Hall in October 2023, a Christmas Concert in Glasgow’s Princes Square in December 2023 and to conclude Shine will be presenting their 20th Anniversary Concert in Lanark Memorial Hall in February 2024.
